A significant number of K-3 students in the U.S. struggle to meet grade-level expectations. Reading scores have continued to decline since 2020, with some students falling further behind than others. Only about half of grades K-2 are on track for reading by third grade, with 3 in 10 significantly behind. Studies have indicated that students who are behind in reading by the end of fourth grade are four times less likely to earn a high school diploma. Previous statistics highlight a concerning trend of early literacy delays in the U.S., indicating a need for increased focus on early literacy interventions.
Academic intergenerational programs in elementary schools with older adults can provide resources to address early literacy concerns. Older adults can support students and teachers with reading in the classroom. Older adult volunteers in intergenerational programs can also assist teachers by reviewing curriculum materials with small groups and individual students.
I offer personalized guidance on everything from finding older adult volunteers, setting up trainings, and getting necessary clearances. I can assist your school district in making community and network connections to extend your new intergenerational program throughout each school year. Invest in your students' future with an academic intergenerational program focusing on reading, and enhance their potential to get on grade level.
